At Hervey Bay, took a bus trip out to Fraser Island. Very good.
We had booked a day tour out to Fraser Island and so at 7:30 am we were waiting on the edge of our campsite to be picked up by the courtesy bus. An hour later (after picking up a bus load of people) we arrived at the Marina, and soon after that we were on the ferry across to Fraser Island.
Fraser Island is the world's largest all sand island. Over the years though, there have been enough nutrients in the sand to support plant life, and there is quite a bit of vegetation. All the roads there are soft, white, silica sand so drivers have to have 4-wheel drive vehicles. They loaded us onto 4-wheel drive busses and off we went. We stopped at a beautiful sand lake, had a walk through a sub-tropical rainforest, drove along the beach, which is an actual highway - drivers have to follow highway rules, saw a huge sea turtle, visited the colored sands which reminded me of the Bryce Canyon area of the US, stopped at a shipwreck, swam in a crystal clear sand bottom creek ... and then headed back.
